The City Is Waiving Sticker Penalties For Chicago Drivers For All Of April

Mar 27, 2025

CHICAGO — The Office of the City Clerk is waiving vehicle sticker penalties for Chicago drivers for all of April.

This means that from April 1-30 for “Amnesty Month,” Chicago drivers can purchase a city sticker for their motorbike, car or truck with no late fees or back charges. All Chicagoans who drive, park, lease and/or own a vehicle in the city must purchase a city sticker if they have a Chicago address.

Annual vehicle city stickers in 2025 are $53.04 for motorbikes, $100.17-$159.12 for passenger vehicles and $235.71-$530.40 for trucks.

Drivers can pay for full-year stickers, or they can get four-month stickers for a lower initial cost.

Chicago residents must purchase a vehicle sticker within 30 days of moving to Chicago if they own a vehicle, or within 30 days of purchasing a vehicle.

Outside of April’s Amnesty Month, late fees for vehicle stickers or renewals are $60, or $30 for qualified seniors, city clerk spokesperson Diana Martinez told Block Club.

Chicagoans who have purchased a new vehicle or received a new license plate should make sure their city stickers are transferred to the correct vehicle and plate or purchase new ones, according to the city clerk’s office.

“We are pushing so hard on this Amnesty Month message because we want people to take this opportunity, regardless of the last time they purchased a City Sticker, to get on track,” Martinez said.

To get a sticker during Amnesty Month without any late fees, Chicagoans can visit the City Clerk locations at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St.; the North Side Office, 5430 W. Gale St.; or the South Side Office, 5674 S. Archer Ave.

They can also visit any Department of Finance location. These include the Southwest Payment Center, 4770 S. Kedzie Ave.; the Northwest Payment Center; 4445 N. Pulaski Ave.; the Southeast Payment Center; 2006 E. 95th St.; or the Central Payment Center, 400 W. Superior St.

Chicago drivers who are new residents must bring their vehicle registration, government-issued photo ID, proof of address (with a lease, mortgage or utility bill) and proof of when they moved to Chicago (such as a lease start date or closing document on the purchase of a home).

Residents who have purchased a new vehicle should bring their vehicle registration, government-issued photo ID, proof of address and the vehicle’s bill of sale.

Outside of Amnesty Month, Chicagoans can purchase annual vehicle stickers, residential daily passes and dog licenses here. You can also purchase a CityKey — an optional government-issued ID that also serves as a Chicago Public Library Card, a Chicago Transit Authority Ventra Card and a Chicago Rx prescription drug discount card — here.
